Mallakhamb, a rich Indian Traditional Physical Culture was a dying sport, practiced only in handful places in independent India. Charmed by the potential of Mallakhamb, in the early 1970’s, a 20– year old youth Uday V. Deshpande pledged to revive this tradition and made it his lifetime mission to revitalise, propagate, and popularise Mallakhamb.
“SHREE SHIV CHATRAPATI AWARD” 1982-83 as Sports Worker, in Mallakhamb, Conferred by the Government of Maharashtra, in May 1984.
“District Sports Award 2003” as Best Mallakhamb coach, given by Mumbai City District Sports Office of Directorate of Sports & Youth Services, Maharashtra state in July 2004.
“Dadoji Kondadev Puraskar 2003-04” as Best Coach, in Mallakhamb, conferred by the Government of Maharashtra, in February 2005.

Uday Vishwanath Deshpande, a dedicated Mallakhamb enthusiast, has made significant contributions to the sport’s promotion, coaching exceptional players, organizing events globally, and nurturing inclusivity, all driven by his genuine passion and expertise.
Revival of Mallakhamb
Uday V. Deshpande embarked on a lifelong mission in the early 1970s to revive, promote, and popularize the ancient Indian tradition of Mallakhamb.
Deshpande’s global impact expanded Mallakhamb to six continents and 47 countries, establishing permanent training centers abroad. His leadership led to competitive Mallakhamb development, mentoring champions and shaping judging standards. Recognized by the Indian government and Olympic authorities, his tireless efforts have elevated Mallakhamb to international acclaim while preserving its history and art for posterity.
