Malla” is a wrestler and “Khamb” denotes a Pole. Hence Mallakhamb means a pole used by wrestlers to develop their skills. It was originated in Maharashtra about 200 years ago and now is slowly spreading all over the Country and abroad. It is known as a unique piece of apparatus, which gives maximum exercise to each and every part of the body within the shortest time. All the abilities required in any kind of sports discipline are best developed on a Mallakhamb. Hence it is also known as a ‘Mother Discipline’.
The wooden pole is of Teak wood or Sheesam and is fixed in the ground or supported by iron plates. It is smeared with castor oil, which helps to minimize excessive friction of the body with the pole. Many foreign countries are also taking keen interest in this traditional form of Indian Physical Culture.
